Happy Friday! If you are looking for Friday Forecast it directly follows this tour post. I am pleased and excited to be a part of the Indelible Tour hosted by Kismet Book Touring. I invited author Dawn Metcalf here today to tell us a bit about the stunning and extraordinary art featured on the cover of Indelible. Before we get to all that, let me introduce you to Dawn:
The role of Dawn Metcalf will be played by the tall brunette in the off-the-shoulder, floor-length leather straitjacket. Makeup by Clinique, buckles by Jada Pinkett Smith, hair by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
I have no good excuse for the way I write. I lived in a normal, loving suburban home, studied hard, went to college, went to graduate school, got married, had babies and settled down in northern Connecticut. Despite this wholesome lifestyle, I’ve been clearly corrupted by fairy tales, puppet visionaries, British humor and graphic novels. As a result, I write dark, quirky and sometimes humorous speculative fiction.
Please welcome Dawn:
My name is Dawn Metcalf and my novel, INDELIBLE: Book One of the Twixt comes out July 30th from Harlequin Teen. While we’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, I know I’m as guilty as anyone and I am incredibly fortunate to have a stunning cover designed by the incredibly talented Mario Sanchez Nevado. I had the opportunity to ask him some questions about his art, his process and his work on INDELIBLE in order that we can appreciate it all the more.
1) How were you approached to create the cover art for Indelible?
I was directly contacted by Gigi Lau of Harlequin Teen. She saw my portfolio on Behance and I guess that she thought I had to be the one illustrating for The Twixt!
2) How would you describe your style?
A burst of colors describing surreal and organic environments, that show us the reality behind what we perceive on our quotidian lives.
3) Did you get to read the book before starting
Not actually. Gigi sent me the chapter where the related event to the iconic rose takes place so I could have some references when designing the rose for the cover.
4) What is your creative process?
For my personal artworks it's a sort of automatic "writing" and then deciding the right conceptual direction when pretty much everything is placed over the canvas, so I can deliver the message as clearly as possible but choosing the elements right from my subconscious side.
For "Indelible", there was plenty of different sketching and designing stages for creating the perfect rose*. Then I started the digital process, which mainly involved creating the line art using textures from burnt papers, and then creating all the magic that is coming from behind. After that, the background was defined and after some nice post-production touches to make the cover look as homogeneous and awesome as possible, the choosing of typography for it was made and we came to an end for it.
5) What is something people wouldn't normally notice about this piece of art?
The fact that the rose is burnt over a metallic sheet instead of paper!
* Harlequin Teen published some of those sketches on Facebook.
A big thanks to Dawn and Gigi for taking the time to share with us all that went into making such a fantastic cover, it is gorgeous!
