Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post here on Rainy Day Ramblings where I discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog.
Here is this week's question:
How did you do with your goals for 2016?
Sigh.....I don't even know where to start with this one. 2016 was a traumatic, turbulent year, yet also one of growth and new beginnings. For all you long time followers, you have been with me throughout the journey. For all you newbies, my whole world came tumbling down at the end of last April when I received unexpected and terrible news. My mother, who had just turned sixty seven, was diagnosed with four large metastatic brain tumors. Her prognosis was dire, she was given anywhere from days to a few weeks to live. I dropped everything and flew home to Idaho to be with her. My beautiful mother passed away at home on June 30th.
Since that time, each and every day has been a journey and a struggle. I have grown and dug deep to find incredible strength I didn't know I had, and I have changed so much.
So perhaps I didn't knock out all the goals I set, but I certainly set some new ones during the year, and I am happy with all I have accomplished.
Here is a recap of the goals I set last year and how I did:
Keeping Up with the Blog: This is a win and fail. When everything happened, I, at first thought, I might be able to keep up with my blog as a distraction, but then I realized it was just too much, so I put my blog on hiatus for three months. When I returned in August, I was happy to get back, but I initially struggled. I have kept up with the blog since then, and I am glad that my love returned. The blog and the blogging community have been a great source of therapy for me.
Catching up on the TBR Pile: Another win and fail. Before everything happened, I was on a mission to get through that TBR, but then I practically stopped reading for three months. When I got back to reading, I went through phases where I did a lot of comfort reading, and I grabbed many books that bloggers recommended. I definitely cut back on my book intake, and the last three or four months of the year, I did a great job of getting through the requested books. I am hoping to really tackle this goal again next year.
Walking: This was my big win for the year. I wasn't doing great with my exercise goal early on as it was so rainy and wet that I couldn't get out. Then in the early spring I got after it and was doing great, and then I was a couch potato during my mom's illness. After I came home, I went on a tear, I exercised like crazy, pushing myself, hoping that the exertion would make me tired so I could sleep at night. Since then, I have been doing three miles four to five days a week.
Organizing: This was another win for the year. At the end of 2015, we got rid of a lot of clutter and cleaned and organized. I am a bit of a neat freak, so it wasn't too hard to achieve this one. I finally buckled down and got my one remaining junk cupboard cleaned and I went through all the clothes in my closet and got rid of a bunch of clothes. It feels so nice to have things neat and organized.
Spending Time with My Family: This was another goal that I did well on. One thing I learned throughout this year was that there is nothing more important than friends and family. After losing my mom, I realized that we waste too much time plugged into the internet etc. So I endeavored to unplug more and spend more time with my kids. I also am trying to stay in better contact with my siblings and my extended family. I couldn't have made it through everything with my mom without my siblings and dad, and all the love and support that we received from our extended family. I was surprised that when I reconnected with aunts, uncles and cousins, some of whom I haven't seen in years, it was like a day hadn't gone by and we picked up where we left off. Trust me, life is too short. Spend more time with your love ones!
Random Acts of Kindness: Another goal that started out well, and then it took awhile to get it back on track. I am trying to continue to donate to charities, my library, my kids' school and anywhere else I can think of. Don't think that you have to donate a lot, sometimes just a few dollars helps especially if you do it often. I make sure to take all the books I receive from publishers down to my library and pass them on. I am also volunteering a couple of days a week at my children's school. Even if my act of kindness some days is just a smile and a kind word, it makes a small difference.
Reading Goals: Unfortunately, my reading goals were hard to achieve. I had originally set out to read 175 down from 200 my last couple of years, but then I had to lower it to 150. It was stretch to reach 150. I did do a little better with my audiobook goal, I set out to read 15 audiobooks and I made that goal.
So as you can see, my goals for the year were a mixed bag. Even though I didn't reach everything, I certainly tried, and I think in the face of all the adversity, I did pretty darn well. Deep breaths.....I am hoping 2017 has a lot of good things in store. Wishing all of you a happy 2017.
