Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post here on Rainy Day Ramblings where I discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog. If you are participating, feel free to leave the link to your post in the comments.
Here is the question of the week:
Do you really read excerpts when featured on blogs?
I am going to be completely honest. The answer for me is no. Most of the time, I do not read excerpts and features posted on blogs. Why? There are several reasons:
Time: I am having a hard time finding time to blog and return comments these days. It seems I can only get it done two to three times a week, and when I do find the time, I usually have a bunch of blog comments that need returning. I don’t have extra time to read lengthy excerpts on blogs for a book that I am probably not going to read.
Not Interested: Most of the time, the excerpts featured are likely for books that are not in genres that I read, or they just don’t interest me. If I am not interested in reading the book, an excerpt isn’t likely going to change my mind. However, I have been wrong.
Interested: If I am interested in the book, I am still am likely not going to read the excerpt because I don’t want preconceived notions or possible spoilers to ruin my experience. I am to the point where I rarely reread the synopsis before reading the book because too often, there are spoilers in the synopsis. I like to go into the read blind.
Cut and Paste: I read blogs for content, and blogs that feature a lot of cut and paste type blogging, placing excerpts, blurbs, books covers, blasts, blitzes, etc. are blogs that I am likely not going to read. I don’t need ads or spam in my blog reading, I want book reviews, discussions and interesting posts. It doesn’t take much effort to copy and paste an excerpt.
Lengthy: I have run across several excerpts that go on and on and on. Again, I don’t have time to sit down and start reading a book. If you want to grab my attention a short excerpt, maybe a couple of paragraphs, is all I can handle. Most of us have short attention spans and we are not going to wade through a ten page excerpt.
These are few reasons why I don’t take time to read excerpts. If the book interests me, I might skim a few lines, but don’t post ten pages of an excerpt and expect me to read it all, I don’t have the time or the patience. I would much rather read a review.
What about you all, be honest, do you really read excerpts?
Next week’s TMST:
Are most of your review books for publishers or are you reviewing books of your choice?
