Four stars: A funny paranormal romance with charm.
Marty Andrews is driven and determined to earn a sky blue convertible, and if it takes pedaling Bobbie-Sue Cosmetics to old ladies in restaurants, then so be it. Unfortunately, her two recruits, Nina and Wanda, don't share her enthusiasm. Nina has a downright bad attitude, and she is even foul mouthed when it comes to Bobbie-Sue (gasp), while Wanda tends to be on the timid side. One night after the trio is returning from the latest Bobbie-Sue gathering, Marty is accosted by a large dog in the alley. Her teacup poodle, Muffin, leaps into action and bites the big, hairy dog. When Marty tries to intervene, she is accidentally bitten. A few days later, Keegan Flaherty shows up at her door and informs her that he is actually a werewolf and he is the one who bit her, and now she is a werewolf, too. Marty's world spins out of control, she is in danger of losing her Bobbie-Sue career, and she is a werewolf, say what? How will being a werewolf fit into her Bobbie-Sue color wheel?
What I Liked:
- This was a quick, fun paranormal romance that kept me laughing. I liked that it was on the light side, and that it had a couple of good twists at the end. If you are looking for a good paranormal romance that is funny, look no further.
- The characters in this book are terrific. Marty, though, does take a bit of time to warm up to. In the beginning, she is uptight and all she can think about is Bobbie-Sue Cosmetics and her color wheel. She is materialistic and a bit short sighted. However, after the bite, she starts to come around, and by the end, she was a character I admired. I liked that she had spunk and that she was determined to stand on her own two feet no matter what. Even when she is bullied, she doesn't run tattle telling, she chooses to show what she is made of. By the end, she was a character I could totally get behind. Nina is without a doubt the most hilarious character in the book. She is a foul mouthed straight shooter. She tells it likes it is, no holds bar. Some of the stuff that shoots out of her mouth is downright funny. She was my favorite character, and I wished that she had a larger role. The sexy Keegan Flaherty is pretty easy to like. He is a knock out, but there is more to him than just being hot and sexy. He is also driven, and determined, and I like that way he refused to let the Were Counsel push him around. The additional characters, Mara, Sloan and Wanda are also great additions to the cast. I definitely enjoyed the characters.
- The romance is a slow burner, and it is a case of opposites attract. I liked that it took plenty of time to kindle and that the parties were so different, and they actually drove each other crazy at times, but when they got together, their chemistry sizzles and they totally work. This was a terrific romance.
- The plot is rather straight forward without a bunch of drama and unnecessary frills. I did enjoy the twist at the end with Marty, and I liked that everything wraps up nicely with a solid Epilogue. No cliffhangers or unanswered questions even though this is the first in a series.
- I listened to the audio version of this and I thought that Meredith Mitchell did a great job with the voices and characters. I didn't have any issues with her male voices and thought she did an excellent job with both Nina and Marty's voices. If you get the opportunity to do the audio version of this one, I recommend it.
And The Not So Much:
- Even though I appreciated that the plot was simple, I was hoping for a bit more detail on the whole werewolf condition. If you haven't read a werewolf book before, you might be a little lost. There isn't a lot of discussion on the condition, especially when it comes to the werewolves that are born that way. You do get a few scant details as the story unfolds, but I found that there wasn't much depth.
- This is definitely an adult read as there are some steamy scenes and lots of profanity. If you are a reader that likes your books a bit on the tame side, some of the blasphemy and profanity might offend you.
- Since the author is going for fun, light and flirty, the overall book lacks detail and depth. I had no problem with this because it is nice to pick up a book that is easy and fun, but the overall plot was predictable aside from one twist at the end.
The Accidental Werewolf is an entertaining, light paranormal romance perfect for those who want something quick, easy and funny. I enjoyed this book and I loved the characters. I appreciated that everything wraps neatly at the end and there aren't any loose threads, so nice to get that in a series. I will be continuing this series as it is perfect to squeeze in between the heavier reads.
I borrowed a copy of this book from the library in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated for this review.
